'Mr. Sam Presents: The Bandana Splits' Album Review

If you've ever wanted to be taken back to a time when women wore the classic circle skirts with petticoats underneath, wore their hair up in high pony tails and walked around in saddle shoes then this is the album you need to listen to.

The Bandana Splits
(love the name!) are a charming female harmony group who honor girl bands of the 50's and 60's, comprised of Annie Nero, Dawn Landes, and Lauren Balthrop.

Together, Annie, Dawn, and Lauren create a vintage style and retro-pop tune that is rare now a days and is definitely missed. They have the softest and most magical, yet powerful voices. Their sound and beats pick you up out of the 21st century and take you back to a time when it was cool to hang out at the soda fountain shop and boys considered it a commitment if you wore his letterman jacket.

I can easily compare the sound of this album to music from such classic idols as The Ronettes and The Andrew Sisters.

The self-titled album Mr. Sam Presents: The Bandana Splits debuted on August 16, 2011 and is fun, warm, catchy and had me snapping my fingers to the beat within minutes.

Recorded at Landes’ Saltlands Studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn, the record displays their unique songwriting and sweet 3-part harmonies performed live around an old RCA ribbon microphone. Accompanied by spastic guitar, Muppetesque drum and bass jams, and slinky organ riffs. Producer Sam Cohen sonically infused the record with Motown grooves, Brazilian psychedelia, and a tasteful dash of classic country schmaltz making it sound totally original and new.

In a recent interview the girls revealed that they first met in 2008 where Lauren and Annie invited Dawn to sing with their band Balthrop, Alabama for a Christmas show. Dawn then wrote a song about falling in love with a Salvation Army guy, which the girls then sang together. They liked it so much that they then decided to get together on days now called "Splits days", where they hang out and drink lemonade, talk about boys and write songs.

In support to Mr. Sam Presents: The Bandana Splits album debut, the girls will be performing a bunch of shows around NYC in the upcoming days so if you're around there, check them out.
