Imelda May: Mayhem Album Review

Listening to Imelda May's new album, "Mayhem" is much like being transported back in time. Her elegant, seductive and fun voice makes you want to slip into something that shows off your curves, fishnet stockings and rummage through your closet for those sexy peep toe heels you've just been dying to wear.

The 50's may be long gone but Imelda May brings them back with her rockabilly, jazzy swing, blustery blues. The beats and sound, which are very cocktail lounge-like, reminded me a lot of such great performers like Brian Setzer, Elivis, Peggy Lee and Patsy Cline.

"Mayhem" is the Irish born singer's second U.S. album. Imelda has achieved triple-platinum status in her native Ireland and gold status in the U.K with her self-released first album Love Tattoo. She wrote 13 out of the 14 tracks on Mayhem including the title track/first single, and U.K. hits “Inside Out” and “Psycho.” The album also contains a rendition of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” which she pulls off wonderfully by putting her own rockabilly swing on it. Imelda May's accomplished band includes husband Darrel Higham on guitars, Al Gare on double-bass, Dave Priseman on trumpet, and Steve RuLshton on drums.

From the moment I put this album into my car's cd player and heard the first track "Pulling the Rug" I knew it was going to be something that would forever have a permanent spot in my music collection. There's no doubt that love was on Imelda May's mind when she wrote these songs and the simple fact that she made them fun instead of depressing makes this album so much more appealing. You move with every beat, shake your shoulders with every pound on the drum and hum to the sound of her alluring voice.

There are very few albums I can say I enjoyed every minute of and this one made it to that list. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to be quickly lifted from their seat by great music that's a whole lot of fun, extremely well-done and is full of rhythm and sass.
