I Thought Everyone Accepted Credit Cards

Yesterday I went to a market {WinCo} that's about 3-4 miles from my house because it always seems to have the best prices. They always have great sale prices on their produce & it's never as dirty or packed as the local Food 4 Less so I don't mind the drive.

Rusty & I had an idea of what we wanted to buy on our very small $30 grocery budget for the week so we quickly loaded everything into the cart & made out way to the "for once not jammed packed" check out lanes. As Rusty's bagging all of our items I slide my credit card to pay & then notice that the machine asks for PIN number. Well the card I'm using isn't a bank card, its an actual credit card so I tell the cashier she may have pushed the wrong button when she then tells me that she didn't push the wrong anything...they just don't accept credit cards.

Yep...I happened to have found the one effing store left in CA that does not accept credit cards people! They do exist, I've been there.

Of course, I was pissed. I explain to the lady that I only have a credit card & she then proceeds to explain that they also take checks, cash & debit cards, like I wouldn't have already used either one of them if I had them. So we abandoned our $26.97 worth of groceries & left it all there for them to restock.

I'm freakin broke...all I have is my credit card because we just finished paying a $379 electric bill...did I tell her this? Of course not because it's none of her business, but who in the world doesn't accept credit cards now a days!

Just a few years ago the hubs, my bro & his then gf (now wife) took a wrong side road on our way home from Las Vegas when we realized we were running out of gas. So we pulled over at this rinky-dinky murder you in the back room kind of gas station in this no where town in the middle of the damn dessert
to fill up and even they accepted credit cards.

Next I'm going to find out people are still working on circa 1981 IBM computers & using chalk boards...get with the times WinCo!

Post Update: E just informed me in her comment that the store most likely doesn't have this service because it costs them too much money & that's how they keep their prices so low. So after feeling like a bit of jerk for ranting about how pissed I was, I've come to the conclusion that I get it. I get why they want to keep the prices low for customers (I love their prices) but it still doesn't change the fact that it is horribly inconvenient & that they need to post a ginormous sign at the entrance that states they don't accept credit cards so someone else doesn't look like a broke jerk at the check out lane.

  1. I know this doesn't help, but they don't accept credit cards because of the high merchant rates that go with the credit cards. And Winco tries to keep their prices down, this is one way they do it.

That totally sucks though that you had to abandon your groceries!

  2. I'm sorry this happened to you, but it makes NO sense. I thought every place of business accepted credit cards.

  3. Yep. There are, in fact, places that still don't take credit/debit cards. I think it's insane and super annoying because I very rarely carry cash. And, I kind of wish they'd let you know beforehand so you don't end up at the check-out embarrassed and frustrated.

I know how it feels to be broke. And it's a rough time of year for it, too. Hang in there...

  4. i did that too the last time i was at winco. fortunately enough my darling husband was there to save the day with his bank card.

still it is frustrating! though its nice that they want to keep the prices down, ya know!

  5. Costco is the same way. They only accept debit cards or American Express.

  6. Nah, i'm with you: who doesn't accept credit cards in this day and age...
That little bit about the gas station where you could have been murdered in the back room accepting credit cards was a nice tough though. Bravo for that bit of genius!

  7. Oh no!!! I never have cash. I'd be in trouble.

    Lots of yummy love,
Alex aka Ma What's For Dinner

  8. It would be good to have such a sign; since so many people do use credit cards(and I'm sure it happened there plenty of times prior) hugs.

I love comments!
