Favorite Movie Tuesday

Rusty & I rented this movie over the weekend & I couldnt beleive how much I loved it. And, because of all my movie love for it I have chosen it for this weeks' pick...

The Invention of Lying stars Ricky Gervais (who also wrote/directed this movie), Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis C.K., Tina Fey, & Jonah Hill. Rusty has been a big fan of Ricky Gervais' for a while but I never thought he was all that funny, I guess I just didn't get his sense of humor, so I opted not to watch this in the theaters. As you might have noticed, I tend to watch all the crappy movies in the theater & opt to not watch the good ones, I'm lame like that.

If you've ever watched the original The Office series you probably know that Ricky Gervais wrote & starred in it & if you haven't ever watched it...well, now you know. I watched a couple of episodes of this BBC show but couldn't handle it because I kept comparing it to the American version (which I love). So when this movie first came out...yes, I totally passed judgement & I'm totally eating my words now.

This movie was hilarious! Like seriously laugh out loud funny. It opens with funny & closes with funny. Jennifer Garner is so adorable & she adds so much comedy with some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth. Her first scene is one of my favorites :)

Alright, I'll stop bragging & tell you a bit about the movie...It's a world where everyone tells the truth - and says just about anything they're thinking. Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is a screenwriter, about to be fired. He's short and chubby with a snub nose. He's set up on a blind date with Anna who outright tells him that she's not into him but thinks he's nice & they become friends. Upon being fired from his job & possibly being evicted he finds that he has the ability to say something "that wasn't" (lie), which no one can do. Then, when his mother's on her deathbed, frightened of the eternal void that awaits her, Mark tells her that a type of heaven awaits her on the other side. The hospital staff overhear his description of 'Heaven', believe every word, and tell others. Soon Mark is a prophet, his first inventive screenplay makes him rich & gets him his job back but this still isn't enough for Anna who is now in love with him but doesn't want to have 'chubby snub nose' kids, which will happen if she stays with him. It's now up to Mark to find a way to show Anna that he is the best pick even if he is chubby & has a snub nose.

I really really liked this movie so I highly recommend you watch it if you like dry comedies (Little Miss Sunshine, Sunshine Cleaning, Hot Fuzz) & are looking for something to watch with alone or on date night. If you don't like I'll send you a $1...ok, no I wont but you can totally tell me I lied & can suck it.

Here's the trailer for your eyeballs viewing pleasure:

Movie trivia:
  • Jason Bateman who plays the doctor in this movie previously played Jeffrey Tambor's son ("Arrested Development" (2003)) and Jennifer Garner's husband (Juno (2007)) and yet in this movie he never appears on screen with them.

  • When trying to secure Philip Seymour Hoffman for his cameo his agent claimed he was too busy so Ricky Gervais requested his email address and sent him the following: "Dear Philip, will you please appear in my new film? There is very little money involved as I spent the budget on testicular implants, but don't look upon them as my testicles, look at them as our testicles." Phillip Seymour Hoffman couldn't refuse after that.

  • Ricky Gervais's motion picture directing debut.

  • The chapel where Jennifer Garner is getting married near the end of the film is the same chapel she was getting married in in her previous film, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009).

  4. I haven't seen this movie yet, I didn't think it'd be that good. Now I'll have to check it out. Plus, who can seriously resist Jennifer Garner? She's too cute for words.

Yea, it was good to watch the movie (Hurt Locker), and try to pick it apart. If Rich had watched it I never would have gotten through it, he would have just been yelling at the tv. *lol*

Rich has never seen PCU, I keep telling him how awesome it is. And that's where my crush for Jon Fareau and Jeremy Piven started. *lol*
